About
Darla is a dancer and educator currently based in Mexico City. Born in Los Angeles, raised in Guadalajara to dancer and painter parents - she uses her multi-cultural and unique life experiences to bring authenticity to her creations. Based in improvisation, contemporary and hip-hop, Darla uses her dance technique and theater background to create original movement to connect with her movers.
Experience
After six years of competition dance team training in jazz, hip-hop, lyrical and character dance, Darla went to UC Santa Cruz where she studied language studies and theater arts with an emphasis in contemporary dance. During her time there she studied with Tandy Beal, Ted Warburton and Gerald Casel. She also choreographed for multiple shows such as: Random with a Purpose, I Dream of Chang and Eng and RENT. In Los Angeles Darla has had the privilege to develop movement workshops and choreograph shows with the The Attic Collective, as well as create movement for films such as Sonder. She also developed her technique at The Sweat Spot, Millenium and The Edge. Darla has also trained and performed internationally with Madrid, Spain based performance companies led by Coke Viaga, and Azahara Ubera and at studios such as El Amor de Dios. Most recently Darla has trained at La Cantera in Mexico City, and done workshops in the Continuum movement vocabulary with Omar Carrum.
Darla is an educator by profession and has taught English through dance with educational companies in Madrid and Mexico. Similarly, she has taught choreography with Camp Bravo performing arts summer camp, as a guest teacher at schools within LAUSD, and workshops with The Attic Collective. She loves her students and getting them to feel comfortable in their bodies in whatever way they move.
